DOROTHY SHAW grew up in Austin, Texas, and earned her art degree from The University of Texas at Arlington. She worked as an art director and graphic designer for advertising agencies in the Dallas/Fort Worth area before moving to Oklahoma City in 1996 and founding dotgraphics, an award-winning design and advertising studio. Over the past decade, Dorothy has also illustrated eight children’s books and written one of her own.

 

Throughout her career, Dorothy has explored museums, cultures, and visual traditions as she traveled the world: experiences that continue to inform her work today. She now focuses primarily on oil painting, drawing on a lifetime of observation, design, and storytelling. Her paintings often reflect relationships, memory, emotion, and the quiet connections that shape our lives. Committed to ongoing growth in her practice, Dorothy studies with other fine artists and continually refines her craft. She seeks to create paintings that invite reflection, reward sustained looking, and offer viewers space to discover their own meanings within the image.

ARTIST'S STATEMENT: 

My paintings begin with quiet moments of observation that suggest a larger story and invite viewers to bring their own presence into the image. I want my work to have an immediate appeal while unfolding slowly, encouraging sustained looking and reflection. I want you to feel the paintings in your mind and heart.

 

I am drawn to subtle relationships and quiet forces that shape our lives—past, present, and future—as well as to the inner landscapes of thought, memory, and the possibilities that extend beyond the present and physical. Images may arise from lived experience, then move toward places where emotion, memory, and imagination meet.

 

My goal is not simply to record images, but to create space for reflection and contemplation. Meaning continues to unfold long after the first glance, allowing viewers to discover their own connections and interpretations within the work.
